Seedlings Mount Brewery

Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

The brewery occupied both sides of a street which ran downhill from a point along Corporation Street near to the Burdock Way roundabout to Crib Lane. Offices were erected along the northern side of Corporation Street with the main brewhouse behind. Stables and ancillary buildings stood on the opposite side of Corporation Street. The origins of the Seedlings Mount Brewery can be found at the Stannary Inn, Green Lane which was operated from 1848 by Richard Whitaker, a beerseller. During 1851and 1852 he was able to buy two plots of land adjacent to his beerhouse where he set up a small brewery. As the business grew Whitaker acquired 626 sq. yds. of land at Seedlings or Neddy Haigh's Field where he erected a new brewhouse and a dwelling for himself and his family. More land was purchased as the business expanded further, until the whole of the site between Corporation Street and Crib Lane had been purchased. Extensive stables were housed in a converted saw mill on the opposite side of Corporation Street. A new brewhouse was erected in 1894 to the designs of Halifax architect C.F.L. Horsfall, which together with the maltings erected two years previously (qv) formed the key elements of the complex which survived throughout the remainder of the brewery's existence. The business was acquired in 1968 by Whitbread and Co. along with a tied estate of 135 houses, and brewing ceased the following year. Demolished 1972/3.
