Gomersal Mills

Description and History of Site:-

Covering a large site, from the 1850s the centre of operations of Thomas Burnley & Sons. Now redeveloped with housing.Gomersal Cloth Hall, built in 1775, had failed by 1786 in the face of opposition from Leeds merchants. It was converted to a factory, for cotton-spinning and later woollen cloth manufacturing. Away from any water-power, it was an early example of a steam-driven textile mill. - A major rebuilding and extension occurred in 1913. - Gill Cookson-10/01/2015
