Egton Brickworks

Description and History of Site:-

The site is now a field for cattle grazing on the roadside. Brick walls of a derelict building remain.Dr William Davison moved to the area from Alnwick in the mid-1850s, and bought for sheep farming grassland known as Egton Bent, which included the disused site of Egton Racecourse. He recognised that the clayey, waterlogged soils were suitable for brickmaking and established a brickworks and kiln at the head of Cold Keld Beck. The enterprise was short-lived and the site was shown as disused on the map surveyed in 1892. Nearby Egton Cottage High Farm was built from the bricks; all that remains is its cart shed, called Black House. The brickworks site has been restored to grazing land.
