RAF Danby Beacon

Description and History of Site:-

Now open moorland. It is possible that some surface remains of the foundations of the radar receiving masts are still visible on the northern edge of the site.Part of the 'Chain Home' Radar network. RAF Danby Beacon was planned during 1938. There were difficulties in beginning the construction of the station, partly due to access issues, necessitating the construction of a new road, and heavy snow in January 1939. The station seems likely to have become operational in mid to late 1939. As well as the four transmitting masts and four receiving masts there was a moderately sized support facility providing accommodation, stores, a NAAFI and a small 'cinema'. Closed 1957.

The transmitting masts would have been similar to those at RAF Stenigot (LIN00113), where one is still extant.
