Summer Bridge

Description and History of Site:-

Jervoise wrote: " ... two segmental arches with double arch-rings in two orders, and a cutwater with a recess on the upstream side. It has been widened downstream to more than twice its original width and is now more than 24 feet between parapets."

A bridge at this location is shown on Jefferies Map of YorkshireProbably originally built in the C17, though Jervoise notes that 'Summerbrig' is mentioned in the Bursar's Books of Fountains Abbey in the mid C15, suggesting that there was some sort of bridge present then.
