Stone Ridge, Embsay Moor

Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

An extensive area of 'hills and hollows' stone delph workings in Millstone Grit Group beds consisting of numerous gritstone outcrops with tooling marks, including wedge pits, plug and feather holes and semi-dressed faces; many abandoned dimension stone and freestone blocks and edge stone roughouts; plus several holloway sledways heading off the moor to the south; and several part-ruined stone-built smithies and a stone-built shelter.Much of its history is unrecorded but in 1437-38 512 wagon loads of stone were taken from 'Staynrig' for repairs to Skipton Castle, and more was taken from here to the castle in 1483 and 1523. Plug and feather evidence show that working here was still underway after 1800.
