Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

It is a disused quarry cut into a natural knoll (Knott Coppy) in Namurian Knott Coppy Grit, part of the Millstone Grit Series. It was worked for building and dimension stone. The footpath from the north follows the access line into the quarry from when it was working and stone was taken out of the quarry on flat-bed bogeys set on narrow-gauge rail track. The iron bed of one bogey lies abandoned on the edge of the quarry. The working faces are clear and show some tooling marks. No start date is known but in 1849 John Bullock gave up the tenancy and it was relet to John Winskill who was a builder based in Settle. It was described in a draft agreement of 1849 as a "stone quarry" (WYAS Morley. WYL 826, no. 159). Winskill's was a one-year renewable lease. The landowner, Thomas Ingilby of Lawkland Hall, retained the right to take stone for his own needs. John Winskill, father and son, built many houses in Settle in the mid to late 19th century. When it was abandoned is unknown.
