Newport Bridge

Description and History of Site:-

Opened in 1934, over the River Tees, it was the first vertical lift bridge designed to carry abnormal highway loading to be built in the UK. The lifting mechanism was taken out of use in 1990. (Grade ll & Scheduled Ancient Monument)
