Pinchbeck or Spalding Marsh Pumping Station

Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

Land drainage pumping station containing a 20hp 'A' frame low-pressure condensing beam engine, thought to have been built by the Butterley Company of Alfreton, Derbyshire, and the earliest 'A' frame engine still in situ, has a bore of 35ins and stroke of 54ins driving a five ton flywheel at 30rpm. It was erected in 1833 and last worked in 1952. Currently demonstrated (powered by electric motor) as part of the museum of Land Drainage. Now (2020) owned by the Welland and Deepings drainage board, the pumping engine pumped water, drained from the surrounding land, into the River Welland at the rate of 7,500 gallons a minute when running. This amounted to around 3 million cubic metres per year on average. The water was transferred by a 7m diameter 'scoop wheel', thought to have been the last such arrangement operating in the fens. The pumping station and steam engine were replaced in 1952 by a new facility constructed adjacent to the original site. (adapted from listing entry)
