Crow Nest Mill chimney

Description and History of Site:-

The Crownest Shed Company Ltd opened a weaving shed in 1915, built over the course of the Crow Nest Syke which is culverted beneath it.

The shed had room for 2,080 looms and was let on a room and power basis, being occupied by five cotton manufacturers in 1917. The whole shed was eventually taken over by Albert Hartley Ltd, cotton goods manufacturers.

The mill was powered by a horizontal cross compound engine of 1,000 horsepower built in 1914 by Burnley Ironworks Company; it was supplied with steam by three Lancashire boilers. The engine was retired in 1966.

The mill has now been demolished and the site replaced with a supermarket and waste recycling facility. Only the chimney remains.
