Norwood (South Metropolitan) Cemetery

Description and History of Site:-

39 acres private cemetery developed by South Metropolitan Cemetery Co. from 1837. Enclosed by fine iron railings and gate designed by Sir William Tite.

Large collection of graves of engineers and industrialists including Henry Bessemer, Thomas and William Cubitt, Joshua Field, Hiram Maxim.

1837 hydraulic coffin lift by Bramah & Robinson survives in situ in catacombs below site of Anglican chapel.

Other graves - John Lawson Johnstone (1839-1900, "Mr Bovril"); Sir Henry Tate; Sir Henry Doulton; John Stevens (engineer and inventor of semaphone signals).

Now run by Borough of Lambeth.
