Greenwich Foot Tunnel

Description and History of Site:-

Built between 1899 and 1902, this tunnel has an external diameter of 12 ft 6 in and 11 ft internal diameter, is 1200 ft long and runs at a depth of between 44 and 66 ft. Opened by the LCC on August Bank Holiday, the Engineers were Sir Alexander Binnie and Maurice Fitzmaurice. Access is via either spiral stairs or lifts housed in circular above ground structures with glass domes. The tunnel and the lifts were modernised in the 1990s and 2010-2012.
