Rippon Bros Works - Huddersfield

Built by Rippon for Alfred Rix Habershon, born Rotherham, 1881. Managing director of Messrs. J. J. Habershon and Sons, Ltd, Holmes Mills, Masborough, Rotherham. The original works were built by Walker Brothers at Holmes Mills in 1757. In 1782 Matthew Habershon was employed by the Walkers. In 1829 he bought the Holmes Tin Plate works and converted them into steel rolling mills. His son, John Jonas, formed J.J. Habershon and Sons Ltd c1875. They made steel strips, sheets and sections - for pen nibs, cycle wheel rims and the motorcycle and car industries. They rolled the material for the stainless steel girdle strengthening the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, and in WW2 they made a significant contribution to the aircraft industry. Alfred died in 1943.
