Damems Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Early cotton mill built in 1789 and changed to worsted in 1824. Built in 1789 by either William or John Roper who were farmers and worsted manufacturers. They employed pauper children in the early years. In 1811 the ropers had 4 mules with 216 spindles each and 6 frames with 52 spindles each. The Ropers continued until 1820 when the mill, machinery and cottages were for sale. It was then bought by the Greenwoods and taken for worsted spinning in 1824 by William Sugden.
