Description and History of Site:-
The site comprised a small, two-storey workshop, plus an open shed for timber to which a warehouse and subsequently a garage were added. Further workshops were also erected higher up New Road, behind the former Bracken's paper warehouse (qv) at SE 09397 24931. As far as can be ascertained, the Patent Cork Pulley Co. Ltd. was established about 1915 as a joint venture between Robinson's Cork Growers and J. Lees and Sons, to exploit a patent for compressed cork products obtained by one of the Robinson's directors. The site chosen for the works was situated off New Road, Halifax, and had been used from at least 1894 by J. Fielding & Son, joiners. The firm made a wide variety of compressed cork products including cork lined cone clutches, friction pulleys and cork tyred wheels. As business expanded various additions were made to the property in a piecemeal fashion, together with the erection of a new warehouse a little further up New Road, behind Bracken's paper warehouse at SE 09397 24931. The business continued until the late 1960s or early 1970s, whereupon the contents of the workshop including presses, stoves, lathes and other equipment were saved and are now displayed within Calderdale Industrial Museum (WYK00163).
