Description and History of Site:-
Engineering manufactory, now principally of centrifuges for industrial processing in general, together with more specialised equipment for the sugar and laundry industries. Thomas Broadbent & Sons Ltd, founded 1864, providing engineering services to the local textile industry across the north of England. Originally supplied a diverse range of products including steam engines, cars and large overhead travelling cranes. At the beginning of the 20th century concentrated on the manufacture of centrifuges, while maintaining general and some rather specialised engineering expertise. The company was the lead contractor for building the small (35 tonne) submarines, known as 'X-craft' during the second world war. About 20 submarines were produced between 1943 and 1944 by a number of contractors including Broadbent.
