Description and History of Site:-
Docks and basin. The river lock has three different paddle mechanisms. The lock cottage has typical Calder and Hebble features.
Twin pile, canal warehouse of two phases with arched entrances and covered hoist facing Brighouse 'new' canal basin. Readily accessible off Mill Lane with car park for patrons. Canal warehouse built to serve the new canal basin created above Brighouse upper lock some time between 1825 and 1850. Old Brighouse basin (qv) was located beyond Huddersfield Road on the south side of the cut. Once the warehouse became surplus to the needs of the Navigation it became Victoria Works. For many years it was home to Sagar Marine, steel boatbuilders. Recently converted for use as public house. At the far end of Wharf Street is a canal roving bridge which also provided access to Brighouse Low Mill. This bridge was re-built incorporating an iron deck and parapets in 1816 following the Company's purchase of the Low Mill from George Lumley Savile. A modern steel deck has likewise replaced the earlier cast iron work.. A quarter milestone stands beside the south abutment of the bridge.
