Lead Mine Hole

Description and History of Site:-
It consists of a single horizontal level driven into the slope below Southerscales Scars. It runs in a straight line for 48m, then turns through a right-angle for 3m then through a reverse right-angle for 12m and terminates. The initial 48m length is a rock-cut vaulted tunnel 1.2m wide by 1.9m wide; the last 12m section is 1.2m wide by 1.6m high. Outside the entrance, which is partially blocked, is a small spoilheap which has a few fragments of copper ore and barytes. Nothing is known of its history but it was almost certainly one of a number of exploratory mines on the flanks of Ingleborough from leases given between 1705 and 1830.
