Description and History of Site:-
Early cotton spinning mill near Low Mill at Long Preston.
It is probable that the mill buildings were those marked as Long Preston Mill on the 1852 6-inch OS map which shows a weir and late near Long Preston Bridge feeding a mill pond and a corn mill. The mill building is still shown 1896 map but not labelled. The site is not on the 1910 map. The site is now occupied by a modern farm barn.
George Ingle noted that - the three-storey mill was water powered, but was unusual in that it had a wind-mill to pump water back into the dam as the mill stream was small. The original mill building is now a barn, but the rows of windows have now been blocked off. Possibly run first by Robert Serjeantson, but later by Serjeantson & Tatham. In 1814, when the mills were for sale it was said that the two mills would 'turn off about 10cwt of calico weekly between them' and that hands were available at reasonable wages. Prospective purchasers were to apply to John Wood at the Auction Mart in Manchester or Mr Heelis at Long Preston. Cotton spinning may not have continued after 1814.
