Description and History of Site:-
Port Mulgrave Harbour and Ironstone Mine. The stone harbour was constructed in 1857 by Sir Charles Palmer in order to ship ironstone to his ironworks in Jarrow. When ironstone from the mine began to run out in 1881 a tunnel was driven 1.6km through the cliff to Dalehouse Valley to bring ironstone from the Grinkle Mine. The Grinkle Mine was connected to the Whitby to Middlesbrough NER line in 1917 and all shipments ceased in 1921. At the start of the Second World War the north pier wall was blown up by the Royal Engineers. The bricked up portal of the tunnel can be seen together with the remains of the harbour walls.
