Description and History of Site:-
On July 18th 1823 the committee of the York Gas Light Co. purchased two acres of land near the River Foss, without Monk Bar, for the purpose of erecting their gas works. In 1844 they merged with a rival company, The York Union Gas Company (established 1836 at the bottom of Hungate), forming the "York United Gas Light Company". In 1850 the Monk Bridge site was extended and the Hungate works closed down. Later still, in 1879, the gasworks expanded onto a site at Heworth, across the river Foss to the east. The company was re-incorporated as the "York Gas Company" in 1912.
The works on the east side of the Foss operated until the mid C20, and were the last to be demolished and the site redeveloped. The last gas holder (erected in the late 1930's) was eventually demolished in 2020, though it had been disused for some time before then.
