Lowna or Gillamoor Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Three storey buildings, stone and pantile with some brick insertions. Large louvered openings to the upper floor floor are very characteristic of tanneries, used for drying the tanned hides. Water course runs along range of buildings, still flowing. No machinery or wheel. (Hatcher, 1973). The mill was originally a corn mill until 1801. Subsequently also used to provide power for various processes relating to the Baxters' tannery which existed until 1914. Pit for high breast-shot wheel was still extant in 1987.
