Murton Railway Station

Description and History of Site:-
Located within the Yorkshire Museum of Farming, Murton Park station was relocated from Wheldrake, a station on the disused Derwent Valley Light Railway. Conveniently, Murton Park station had been to the same design as that at Wheldrake. The DVLR was opened fully in 1913 and, unusually, was never part of the nationalisation of British railway lines in 1948 remaining privately owned for its whole working life. Eventually the line became unprofitable for both passenger and freight traffic and closed in 1981.
In 1990, the Great Yorkshire Railway Preservation Society relocated to the Murton Park site and commenced reconstructing a section of the old DVLR towards York. At this time the station was reconstructed using the original station buildings from Wheldrake, and the railway re-opened in 1993.
