Description and History of Site:-
One of group of mills at the southern end of Thorngate and on Bridge Gate, used at various times for spinning, weaving and carpet manufacture.
Plaque reads:
MILL COURT
WAS OPENED ON SEPTEMBER 26TH, 1985
BY
THE RT. HON. THE LORD MONTAGU OF BEAULIEU CHAIRMAN, ENGLISH HERITAGE.
BUILT IN THE MID 19TH CENTURY AS A WOOLEN FACTORY, THIS BUILDING WAS THE LAST INDUSTRIAL WATERSIDE FACTORY TO BE BUILT IN BARNARD CASTLE. FROM 1935 UNTIL 1983 IT WAS OCCUPIED BY THE NORTH OF ENGLAND CHAMOIS LEATHER CO. WHICH MANUFACTURED PROTECTIVE CLOTHING FOR THE STEEL INDUSTRY AND THE ADMIRALTY. IT WAS ACQUIRED FOR HOUSING AND RESTORED WITH GRANT AID FROM ENGLISH HERITAGE BY THE TEESDALE BUILDINGS PRESERVATION TRUST.
