Cross Gates Gasworks

Description and History of Site:-
Gasworks/coal yard now used for shopping centre car parking, but with one gasholder (of the original two) remaining. Gasworks built by the Cross Gates, Halton & Seacroft Gas Company and connected to the railway (built as the Leeds & Selby Railway in the early 1830s). This enabled gas lighting to be installed in the village of Cross Gates, which is now a suburb of Leeds. Telescopic gas holder of the column-guided type, thought to be the only example in Leeds. The other gasholder was demolished when the Arndale shopping Centre was developed in the 1960s.
