Brackenwood/Heber's Ghyll

Description and History of Site:-
The hillslope within the woods has many Millstone Grit outcrops, large and small, which have been worked for various types of stone products over a long period of time. Only two millstone roughouts have been located but it is clear that many were removed off site long ago.

One is complete and was ready for despatch, propped on stones and peck dressed all over the visible upper face. It is a domed millstone. Diameter 1.54m, thickness at the edge 280mm, thickness at the centre 410mm.

The other was completed on the upper face only and has the eye partly cut, to a depth of 70mm; diameter 1.54m, edge thickness 280mm, eye diameter 270mm. It looks as though it was ready to be turned over to complete the obverse face but was abandoned for an unknown reason.
