within Cottingley park woods and on Black Hills

Description and History of Site:-
Across Black Hills there is ample evidence - on publicly-accessible as well as not accessible - parts of the wood of Millstone Grit outcrops having been worked, mainly as tooling marks and shallow delphs. One intact roughout was seen (SE09906 37760), propped up near vertically with the upper face seemingly complete with the eye cut half way through. Diameter 1.68m, thickness 270mm, eye diameter 200mm.
The one on Lee Lane was clearly in process of being worked more or less in situ, and seen lying horizontally, but for some reason it was abandoned. It is an early-stage roughout. Diameter 1.1m.
