Navvies Memorial

Description and History of Site:-
Memorial, originally to 23 men known to have died during the construction of the nearby Bramhope tunnel between 1845 and 1849 by engineer Thomas Grainger and contractor James Bray. This scale copy of the Gothic crenellated north portal entrance to Bramhope tunnel was 'erected as a memorial at the expense of James Bray Esq, the contractor and of the agents, sub-contractors and workmen employed thereon'.

First constructed in Caen stone, the memorial was later restored in 1913 by the North Eastern Railway and then again in 1988 by Otley Town Council and British Rail, and then again in 2018.
