Description and History of Site:-
Now (2019) site occupied by 'KT Hydraulics'. Originally built some time between 1850 and 1880 as a worsted spinning mill.
Gannex was founded in the 1950's by Joseph (later Lord) Kagan, and took over the mill. Particularly known for their rain-coats, using a woven woollen lining bonded to a waterproof outer layer, which for a while were very well known and highly regarded world-wide.
The UK company closed in the early 1990's, and Broad Lea Mills disused. Subsequently used by a variety of small businesses, the 9 acre site was bought by a local housing association for residential development and/or conversion in 2005, but the mill buildings were demolished around 2010 in part due to the high anticipated costs of refurbishment.
