Clarence Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Built in about 1875 for William Blackburn & Co., worsted spinners. The four-storey mill was 300 feet by 55 feet with warehousing, warping, winding and yarn rooms, offices and a separate detached mechanics shop. By 1879 Blackburn's were using the adjacent and older Brook Mills for wool-combing and other preparatory activities. In 1893, the mills were said to have 15,000 spindles and employ 500 hands. Clarence Mills were sold William Stell of Keighley in 1899, who sold it on in 1900 to Alfred Lund, a worsted spinner from Pudsey. From 1901 Clarence Mills and Brook Mills were two separate concerns. In 1932 Lund Brothers sold Clarence Mills to John Mitton and Sons Limited, worsted spinners of Marshfield and Waterloo Mills in Bradford who moved their businesses to Cleckheaton. John Mitton & Sons Limited continued as worsted spinners to c1977. The Mills were demolished soon after.
