Albion Works

Description and History of Site:-
It seems likely that some buildings remain as part of what is now known as Albion Mills. Described and illustrated in 'The Century's Progress' of 1893, as occupied by C. Beverley, Junior and Co., commission wool-combers. Woolcombers were a relatively small but important part of the woollen industry. Raw wool was received then washed, carded and combed before being forwarded elsewhere to be spun. In 1893 it was said that the company employed about one hundred hands, and were dealing with wool from 'throughout the whole of Yorkshire and Lancashire'. The main mill was four storeys high and there were associated warehouses. The premises were 'operated by a powerful steam engine'. The company was established in 1881 and occupied the Albion Works from 1888.
