Description and History of Site:-
Redeveloped, and newer premises on the site. Now (2018) occupied by religious organisations. The firm of Joseph Hall & Co., founded in 1872 and manufacturing a variety of engineering machinery, moved from West Street to the Burley Engine Works in 1875. The firm was particularly well known for producing machinery used in the manufacture of leather and leather goods. These included setting and scouring machines, bark mills and breakers, fleshing, beating and hair washing machines. They continued also to produce hydraulic presses, steam hammers and cranes, and other heavy engineering machines in addition to the leather working machinery.
