Description and History of Site:-
Completely redeveloped as Trevelyan Square.
The firm of Goodall, Backhouse and Co. was formed as a partnership between Robert Goodall, Henry Backhouse and William Powell in 1858. All three partners has a background in pharmaceuticals. In 1853 Goodall had established a small chemists shop in Wade Lane, Leeds and it was here that he began to manufacture Yorkshire Relish from a family recipe. Backhouse and Powell operated as wholesale chemists in Boar lane. Goodall died in 1870 and the business relocated in 1873 to the premises on White Horse Street that this record relates to. The company continued to expand as makers of the relish and as wholesale chemists.

By the late 1890s, a new works had been established in Sovereign Street and it seems that the drugs side of the operation remained at White Horse Street.

In 1937 the drugs and sauce sides of the business were separated altogether with the pharmaceuticals arm remaining at White Horse Street and operating as Goodall's (Leeds) Ltd., and the Yorkshire Relish side of the operation at Sovereign Street still called Goodall, Backhouse and Co.
