Whitehall Printeries

Description and History of Site:-
Printworks opened in 1865 by Petty & Sons. This family printing company grew to become the first firm in the UK to install colour web offset presses in 1963. Much of their business in the 1960s and 1970s was concerned with the production of mail-order catalogues. More recently they produced magazines and newspaper colour supplements. The business was sold to the British Printing Company in around 1979 before becoming part of Robert Maxwell's British Printing & Communications Corporation group in 1981 and it was subsequently owned by several firms. The 'Printeries' in the attached photograph were apparently still standing in 1984. The present buildings on the site are probably from the 1990s. The presses stopped in December 2014, and the site as a whole closed in 2015.
