West Greengate Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Large early cotton mill later converted to worsted with many additions. Site divided in 1888 and now partly demolished. Built in 1784/5 by a partnership of Abraham Smith, Rowland Watson, John Blakey and James Greenwood. Several changes of partnership took place until Benjamin and William Marriner bought out the remaining partners in 1818 and converted the mill to spin worsted. They were a very successful firm and many additions were made to the mill until a family dispute in 1888 when the mill buildings were divided between two brothers. Edward Marriner took one section, but sold out within a few years. The other section eventually was owned and run by R V Marriner Ltd who became famous for their hand knitting wools.
