Crosland Edge Quarries

Description and History of Site:-
The workings here are seen as a set of discrete workings, possibly worked by different partnerships or businesses, forming a series of bays that extend for over 500m, cut into the upper valley sides. They are linked by a level terrace overlooking the valley and there are traces of a trackway leading along and eastwards from one end to the other. Each bay has a now-overgrown vertical working face with some tooling marks visible in places. In common with many other disused quarries in the general area, these exploited Rough Rock flagstones for building and dimension stone and paving. All work was done by hand. No infrastructure remains. Nothing has been found but these workings, along with similar ones further west along the valley side on Rye Croft Edge, are clearly much older than the many open pit quarries that littered the whole Crosland Hill area.
