Description and History of Site:-
The quarry is a large open working with vertical working faces at the rear, north side and open to the fall of the hillside on the south. It is cut into massive beds within the Rough Rock which were exploited mainly for building stone as the rock is very blocky and easily cut. It was worked without benches and without recourse to powder or dynamite. It is now grassed over but the general lack of discard piles within the quarry and the clear floor give it the impression of having been a tidy operation when in use. No infrastructure survives though the roadway from the quarry to Otley Road is very clear to see. It was worked during the 19th century and into the 20th, but no precise dates have been found. When in use, stone blocks were loosened manually using long bars and picks. Stone and waste were manually loaded into flat carts or V-skips respectively to be pushed along a temporary tramway from the working faces to the stocking yard on the southern edge of the quarry.
