Description and History of Site:-
Harden Moor has 9 open quarry workings, of which four have no known names. All exploited Millstone Grit Group beds for building and dimension stone, though the most recently worked (Harden Moor Quarry) concentrated on aggregate as well as building products.
Cradle Edge Delf, Shaw Delf, Cradle Edge Quarry, Old Midgeham Quarry and the four unnamed delphs were all worked by different partnerships or operators with stone blocks lifted out of the delphs using steam cranes mounted on large stone slabs. Old Midgeham Quarry has large judd walls and stacks of abandoned cut blocks some with dog holes (for chain-lifting) and tooling marks. Variations in the nature of what has survived suggest that the quarries as a whole were worked for several centuries. Nothing has been found of the moor's early history but the last quarry came to an end when renewal of planning consent was refused in 2006. It is currently being infilled and landscaped.
