Blue Stone Delph

Description and History of Site:-
This set of quarry holes - none very deep and all narrow running 250m along the same contour - worked beds within Keighley Bluestone, a fine-grained sandstone that appears bluish-grey when freshly exposed. The beds are very hard and resistant to wear so they were extensively exploited for roadstone during the expansion of the turnpike road network. It was also quarried for the same purposes elsewhere in the Upper Worth Valley and Ponden Clough, as well as at Howley Park Quarry (see WYK 00701). No firm details have been sourced.
