Description and History of Site:-
The quarry formerly worked High Moor Sandstone and Doubler Stones Sandstone for dimension stone, lintels, ashlar building stone and flags and, later on, for road setts and for building Lower Laithe Reservoir from 1912-25. It was a deep open quarry with vertical working faces up to 16m high. Stone was lifted out of the quarry to the dressing floors in skips using a series of steam cranes. On the quarry floor was a network of movable tramway tracks along which skips were hand pushed. The upper half of the working faces was rock that was of no commercial use - the baring - which was removed before workable stone could be accessed. It is known from c. 1840, was still in use in the 1920s but in the 1970s when Penistone Hill Country Park was laid out. Most of the quarry was infilled and landscaped and only sections of upper working face are visible today.
