Buttershaw Mills

Description and History of Site:-
A long 4-storey Italianate style building of monumental design. Set back from the road in an unusually open site, Buttershaw Mill is a good example of a mid C19 integrated large worsted mill. It was built by the firm of S Bottomley and Brothers 1851-52, who first set up business in self employing hand loom weavers, later moving to Brighouse and then to Low Moor where they became established in the worsted trade. The firm subsequently expanded into alpaca and mohair.

To the east of the spinning mill is the tall engine house which until 1956 contained a beam engine.

The mill closed in the 1980s. The spinning mill block was subsequently refurbished for commercial use.

In c1995 the mill's chimney, weaving shed and warehousing were demolished and various ponds were filled in and replaced by a Tesco supermarket. Associated mill workers' housing, in Fleece Street, Orleans Street and Bottomley Street, remains nearby.
