Folly Hall Mills

Description and History of Site:-
The extant buildings represent a small proportion of what was originally a large mill complex. Most of the once extensive site has now been redeveloped into a variety of uses.

Cotton mill built around 1844 by Joseph Kaye to replace an earlier mill which had been burned down. The new mill was designed according to the 'fireproof' principles with stone floors and metal doors isolating the staircases. By 1866 it was described as being occupied by 'Joseph Kayes' exors.' so he must have died shortly before. At that time it was in use for 'Carding and Cloth Finishing' employing 420 Hands and powered by steam. By the early C20 the mills had be taken over by Joseph Lumb & Co., worsted spinners.
