Description and History of Site:-
The two main blocks and quite a lot of the smaller buildings still stand. From the listing description: "A fine mill complex consisting of 2 parallel ranges, designed by Milnes and France with one of the finest extant mill chimneys in Bradford. Sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings. Five-storey road block and 6 to rear range." Currently (2018), the southern block appears to be in use, the northern block appears disused and other parts of the site near dereliction. Built for worsted spinners Daniel Illingworth and Sons, and opened in July 1865. The works were described in some detail in 'The Century's Progress'. They were said to have an overall floor area of about five acres, and the whole site was about eight acres including five water storage reservoirs. The main spinning machinery was driven by a Corliss engine of 1000 IHP, together with two smaller engines of the same type for other purposes. The company was founded by Miles and Daniel Illingworth at the beginning of the 19th century at Prospect Mill, Wakefield Road, and also at one time rented the Union Street mill subsequently occupied by Titus Salt. Prior to their move to Whetley, the company had been operating from purpose built premises at Providence Mills.
