Woodlands Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Worsted spinning mill c1812 with late C19 alterations and additions. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The original mill building now forms the centre of the complex, four storey with a diminishing number of bays to each floor due to the slope of the site. At the north west corner a small square turret rises above the roof line, topped by a pyramidal roof. Beyond to the east, the new engine house and rope race. Attached to the north-west of the old mill, the old engine house and beyond at a higher level the weaving shed also c1860. [Edited from the listing description] Giles and Goodall wrote: "Established in early 19th century as water-powered worsted-spinning mill. Early timber-floored mill (six storeys, eleven bays) survives, showing use of two waterwheels. Mill owned by manufacturer performing hand-powered processes (combing and weaving) off the premises. Rapid expansion after c1850, with addition of new mill (five storeys and attic, nine bays), combing and weaving sheds and warehouses. Steam power added to supplement waterwheels. After. 1860 mill functioned as fully integrated worsted factory."

In 1847 the mill was purchased by John Clough of Keighley who expanded the works until the company failed 1939.
