Description and History of Site:-
Stone built road bridge in the centre of Mytholmroyd that carries the road to Cragg Vale over the River Calder. There are now modern footbridges on both sides of the old bridge. There has been a river crossing at this point for many centuries. An old wooden bridge on the site was replaced by a stone one in 1684. Beneath the two arches spanning the river may be seen on the West side 2 segmental arches of dressed stone with a central pier. Each arch is 9ft. wide with a span of 42ft. There are a number of mason's marks on the bridge. The approaches to the old bridge have changed much since then when there was a fall of around six feet on each side. Two land arches were added on the south end in the second half of the eighteenth century and are wider than the original bridge. The bridge was widened in the early nineteenth century. The bridge was known as "The bridge of fear" for many years and a footbridge was built in 1948-9 overhanging the west side of the bridge, but the 2 ft. wide footpath on the other side was not replaced by a new footbridge until recent years. - Andrew Robinson
