Batchelors Peas

Description and History of Site:-
Site now Nutwood Trading Estate, mixed commercial activities. Opened in 1937, it was at that time the largest pea cannery in Europe. The firm was founded in 1895 by William Batchelor a tea packer who turned to packing dried peas. After a while he began canning peas and by 1913, when he died, this was the primary activity of the company. In 1930 the firm opened one of the first canning plants in which dried peas were soaked, canned and cooked to produce processed peas. The company was bought out by Unilever in 1943. The factory now mostly demolished though it is said that remnants remain in use within the trading estate.
