Storrs Bridge Firebrick Works

Description and History of Site:-
The western part of site closed and was left to await redevelopment, whilst eastern part was redeveloped for other industrial uses.

By 1850 Thomas Crapper and George Henry Marshall were operating clay mines at Storrs Bridge. By 1862 the partnership had become between Thomas Marshall and William Crapper, though they continued to trade as Marshall & Crapper, and were still described as black clay dealers. They had established a firebrick works there by 1864, when it had a weekly output capacity of 30,000 bricks per week. In 1878 a new mine at the rear of the works was started and the partnership of Marshall & Crapper was dissolved, leaving Thomas Marshall to continue alone, until it became Thomas Marshall & Co. by 1881. Following Thomas' death the partnership had become between his son Arthur and James Swift, which was dissolved in 1896, with Arthur continuing alone. By the 1930s they had became Thomas Marshall & Co (Loxley) Ltd. After the Second World War the works were rebuilt, when the company was trading as Marshall Refractories. Thomas Marshall & Co (Loxley) Ltd. were bought out by GR-Stein Refractories Ltd. at an unknown date thought to be in the 1970s, and was subsequently worked by them with the adjoining Storrs brickworks, that they acquired around 1970. The mine at the rear of the works ceased working in 1982, the last underground working in the area. By the 1980s buildings had largely infilled the gap to Storrs Works to the south-east, with GR-Stein Refractories Ltd. operating both as a single works called Loxley. Over time the various sections of the works went out of use. Around 1990 the company's became Hepworth Refractories Ltd., when the last section of the former Marshall works closed.
