Wisewood Rolling Mill

Description and History of Site:-
In 1867 John Wood and Sons set up in business at Wisewood Forge and Rolling Mills, as forgers and tilters. Power was provided by water wheels, supplied by the dam. At an unknown date the waterwheels were replaced by water turbines and a triple expansion steam engine which drove two 12 inch mills.

By the early 1900s they were making double shears, rolling cast steel etc. By the 1930s they were manufacturing steel sheet and bars. Production appears to have ended by c1950.

By the early 1970s the dam and head goit had been substantially in-filled although at the bottom end of the dam the shuttle gate remained in place. The mill buildings were subsequently replaced by the Loxley Park Retirement Home. The dam remains.
