Description and History of Site:-
Pedestrian bridge over the River Don refurbished in 1992 in memory of Sir Donald Bailey, the inventor of this type of portable sectional bridge, who came from Rotherham. Ten sections were supplied by Appleby Frodingham Steel Co of Scunthorpe. Over 4000 Bailey bridges were used in World War 2. Although intended to be temporary, many still exist and are still in use.
