Attercliffe Steel Works

Description and History of Site:-
Steel works (active in 1994) on site of water powered Attercliffe Iron Forge. Records from 1580s associated with Fells in 17th century and Spencers and Swallows in 18th century when it forged steel as well as iron. Sandersons was founded in 1776 on this site in 1822 rebuilt weir - Sandersons Weir (qv). Manufactured steel in West Street and later Darnall Works (qv) forged and rolled it and made products including files and bayonets on this site. Two beam engines were supplied to them in 1848 and a Nasmyth steam hammer c1860. Six waterwheels still working in 1895. The goit was in water to Stevenson Road (SK 376 892) in 2012. East of the road Sandersons buildings used to outline former dam. The goit outlet to the River Don is just above Newhall Road. Site mostly cleared between 2008 and 2014. Some 1870s offices extant in 2014 - the rest of the site used as a tyre processing plant run by Monckton Rubber Technologies in 2015.
